  3. In my opinion, the suitors are only after Penelope because of her wealth and her estate. In the book it says that Penelope is knitting a burial shroud for Laertes and after she is completed, she will have to remarry. Penelope, being the sly poots she is, unweaves the shroud every night to "stall" the process of remarrying and waiting for her sweet Odysseus to one day, return. Telemachus is changing in that he is "taking over his father's role" he gave a great speech at the assembly and is starting to "man-up" a little. At the end of Book II, Tele. decides he must venture to Pylos to look for his father, as Athena intended.

To me, after reading Book V I had to really think about the relationship between Calypso and Odysseus. It seems to me that they had feelings for each other but never acted on their feelings. Poseidon freeks out because he wasn't informed of the assembly on Mount Olympus, so basicially, he had no say in Odysseus' trial. Odysseus was on his was to Phaecians island' when Poseidon spotted him form the Solymi's steep peaks and caused him absolute hell. Thankfully, the goddess Ino is there to help him out and he soon finds a river where he can swim into it. Book V ends by Odysseus on land after Poseidons attack.

  4. I think the suiters are very slobby men. They are going into T's house and eating and killing all of him animals. Most of them only want to have Penelope for the money and also want T dead so they can have his share of the money as well. Penelope is still in love with Ody. He is the father of her child and i can understand why she would want to still believe he is alive, but also it has been many years now and would be good for her to move on, but now we know that he is on his way make but now sure if he will make it. T is now also desiding that he want to go and try to find out if his father is dead or alive.

The relastionship between Odysseus and Calypso is quite interesting because calypso want his to be her husband and make him imortal. He is obviously physically attracted to her because she is a goddess, but he misses his home life. Poseidon get so mad because the other gods had a meeting while he was gone to ethipia. They told O he could go back home and when he saw that O was on his way back to his home land he got mad and tried to kill him. i don't think this is the last we will see of Poseidon on O's journy back home. It ends with O coming onto land with the help of Ino who is a goddess. He was very tired and took shelter in some bushes so he could sleep.

I think the gods want him to be happy at home and that he has suffered enough. All of them but Poseidon

  5. The suitors are worthless trash. They are selfish pigs who only desire to please their own desires. Athena said in book II when she was speaking to Telemachus that he was one of few men who turn out to be as good as or better than their fathers. Most men, according to her, turn out much worse with each generation.

Penelope is a brave woman who truly loves her husband. She remains faithful to him (even though he doesn't return the favor, but then again I guess she didn't know that?) and even goes so far as to undo all her shroud work so that she won't have to marry another man. She is completely dedicated to her husband and is ever longing for the day when he walks back through the door, even though everyone around her is telling her to give up hope.

Telemachus is beginning to realize that there is more he can do that what he originally thought. He is really coming out of his shell and maturing into not just a man, but a hero. At the end of book II, Telemachus is leaving with his group of men and Athena on a boat to find his father.

The gods are continually intervening in pretty much everything the people do. Some are angry, some are compassionate, some are just plain passionate, but no matter what, they are always getting all caught up in the people's business.

  6. Lottie hit the jackpot when she shared her observation that Calypso promised she would make Odysseus immortal. Think about what that means in terms of the "human condition."

  7. I think the suitors are very disrespectful and greedy. The fact that they are always feasting and drinking wine shows that they have no real feelings for Penelope they are only interested because of the great wealth she would bring them. In book II it becomes very obvious that Penelope is still completely in love and devoted to Odysseus. She is making something for his father and says she can't marry until it is done. The fact that she undoes her work every night makes it very obvious she doesn't want to remarry and still hopes for the day her husband will return. I think Telemachus is becoming a man and growing up. He decides to go on a journey to find his father at the end of Book II which I think will be a completely life changing experience for him. He will have to go through a lot of struggles to get there but that just shows how much he wants his father to come home, not only for himself but for his mother.

Calypso and Odysseus are trapped on an island together, during the day Odysseus does nothing but sit on the beach and yearn for his home and his family, but at night he unwillingly lays next to Calypso. It is her dream to have him for her own and have him willingly stay but she knows deep down that will not happen. I think that if Odysseus was really being faithful to Penelope he wouldn't do anything with Calypso and the fact that he does brings my respect for him down. She is being completely faithful with many men throwing themselves at her, but he gets one option and takes it. Even after Calypso offers him immortality which is a huge choice for him, but he makes it easily, he wants to return to his family more than anything. However Odysseus does get sent free to return home, he has to make the journey completely on his own though. Poseidon gets very angered when he sees Odysseus traveling back and creates a very big storm to slow him down and possibly kill him. However he makes it to land and falls safely asleep after escaping the storm into a rivermouth.

I think all of the God's believe he has been punished enough except for Poseidon. He is the only one who wants Odysseus to continue being punished because he is the one who wants revenge.

  8. The suitors are mean and disrespectful. They don't care what other people feel about what they do. They don't have any feelings towards Penelope because all they want from this is the money and that marring her would bring them. Penelope still has strong feelings for Odyessues and has faith that he is still alive. Penelope is making a shawl for her father and when it is finished she has to marry, but every day she weaves and at the night she unweaves it all so it will never be finished. That shows right there that she only has true feelings for her husband and doesn't want anyone else. T is turning out to be a good guy and very wise. Athena told him that he is becoming better than his father already and usually the generations go down. T is also showing more growing up because he set out to go find his father. He finds out that there is acually a lot more that he can do to set out and find his father. So him and Athena set out from the group they were with to go find Odyessues.

Odyessues and Caylpso are stuck on an island together. During the day Odyssues has nothing to do but weep and want his dear Penelope and at night he is unwillingly laying next to Caylpso. Caylpso wants him to herself and wants him to say not because she is forcing him to but because he wants to, but she knows that that will never happen. Odyessues seems kind of like a traiter in some ways because he yearns so much for Penelope but sleeps with Caylpso. He doesn't do it willingly but if he cares so much about her then he should have respect for her. Penelope has all the suitors at her house throwing themselves at her but she doesn't do one thing with any of them, which shows how faithful she is to him. Odyssues does eventually get sent to return home, but unfortunalty he has to make that journey home by himself. When Poseidon sees him free and on his way home, he gets very very mad and creates a huge storm to try and slow him down and try to kill him. Odyssues escapes the storm and safely makes it to a rivermouth. Posiedon is probably the only god who doesn't think Odysseus has gotten enough punishment because he is the only one who still wants revenge on Odysseus.

  9. The suitors are are at T's house only to eat his food, use him, and wait for P to finish knitting her shawl so she can pick a man to marry. P is committed to O and won't give in to the suitors. T says at the assembly that she is seducing the suitors, but won't pick one to marry. He doesn't want her to marry a suitor because he believes his father is still alive. T is getting more mature. He is taking over the role that his father, O, left when he went to fight in the Trojan wars.
At the end of book 2, T decides he should go to Pylos, the advice of Athena, and find out if his father is still alive. At the assembly there were eagles fighting above and it kind of says that O is still alive.
O is forced to stay on an island with the goddess Calypso. She won't let him go back to his home. She wants to be his lover, but he stays faithful to P. My opinion of O is that he is faithful to P and he wants to return home. Poseidon conjures up a storm because he wasn't at Mount Olympus to discuss O's fate. O is saved by Athena and Ino. Ino gives him a veil to wear and keep him safe during the storm. O makes it to land and has to swim around to a river so he can get on shore.

  10. I think the suitors are very annoying and are hoping that Odysseus is dead so that one of them can marry and take the values that Odyssues and P have had. They only care about themselves and only want good things to happen to them they are very selfish. I think its right what shes doing because she doesnt want to marry any of them and shes trying to lead them on but shes not going to marry any of them because she has a hunch that Odysseus is still alive. Big T has changed alot from the beggining of the book he is becoming more of a man and he is going out to look for his father. At the end of book 2 Big T is heading to pylos to find information about his dad so he can hopefully find and save him so that his mother wont have to marry one of the suitors.

Calypso likes O but O still cant get over his beautiful wife at home. They slept with each other but O was not willing and Calypso was. O had a chance to become a god and he turned it down because he wants to come home to Penilipi. I think he made a good choice because he is still putting his family first after 19 years of being away from them and that just shows that he still loves them and he wants to go home. Poseidon wasnt at the meeting that all the gods went to that decided to tell calypso to let him go so he can go back to his family so he got mad and on the way home poseidon made a big storm so he couldnt get home and had to swim to the nearest island that was days of swimming away.

  11. The suiters are greedy pigs. They reside in poor Penelope's house eating her food and having their run of the place while there's nothing she can do about it. In book two Telemachus points out that they wait around pursuing courtship while any decent man would simply go to her fathers house and ask for her hand in marriage. Even when Telemachus tells them to leave they refuse saying there's nothing he can do about it because there's one of him and twenty of them.

I admire Penelope quite a bit. She's a strong woman who as Matthew said, really cares about Odysseus. She is determind to wait for him (the weaving and un-weaving of the shroud.) and not give up the hope that he is in fact alive.

Telemachus is finally beginning to take matters in to his own hands. He's stepping in to his fathers shoes and becoming more of a man and also more of a hero. At the end of book two Athena disguises herself as Telemachus and goes to find him a suitable crew for his voyage. Telemachus makes a point not to tell his mother of his journey as he doesn't want to worry her. However he tells his old nurse maid Eurycelia who helps him prepare.

Odysseus is Calypso's captive. He doesn't want to be with her yet he has no choice as there is now way for him to escape. The book says that during the day all he does is sit on the beach and cry for his home and at night he (unwillingly) sleeps with her. I must stress the 'unwillngly' here because I believe that Odysseus is still devoted to Penelope. He is obviously attracted to Calypso as she is a goddess and VERY seductive, but he still longs for home and Penelope more.

Posieden is upset because the other Gods decided Odysseus' fate without consulting him. So he stirs up the winds and pretty much throw a hissy fit. Luckily for Odysseus though, the goddesses Ino and Athena are looking after him. The book ends with Odysseus swimming up on the beach and falling asleep covered in a pile of leaves.

I think that it must just be in the nature of Gods to meddle. Whether it be good or bad they just can't seem to stay out of mortal business. However I suppose this is a good thing as one could argue that without the help of the Gods Odysseus wouldn't be on his way home. On the other hand if the Gods didn't meddle Odysseus wouldn't be stuck on and island in the first place.

  12. Book 2. The suitors are only after Penelope because they want what she has; wealth, fame, and land. Even With all the suitors around, Penelope still loves Odysseus. Athena says that Telemachus is a very brave person and that he is one of the few that could be better than his father. At the end of the book, Telemachus decides to go and look for his father and he also tells the suitors to leave otherwise he will kill them by morning.

Book 5. The relationship between Odysseus and Calypso isn't that strong. Even though Odysseus does sleep with Calypso and make love with her, he doesn't want to loose Penelope. Odysseus is still a good person, i mean he's been gone for around 19 years and i could see all the stress he has from not seeing his son or wife for so long. Poseidon starts a storm so it's harder for him to get on land, he eventually has to jump off and swim to the island. It takes him three days but he finally makes it to shore and falls asleep.

The Gods are agreeing to let him go because they believe he has gone through enough punishment except for Poseidon.

  13. My impression on the suitors is that they are not very nice people. They are coming in as strangers and wanting to take over. They want Telemachus' father's estate, wife, and the title of king. They don't care what anyone think about them. They are very rude, spoiled, and very ingornt men.
I think Penelope is very smart because she knits a burial shroud for her father, but when she's done she has to remarry. Penelope does not want to get married though so every night she undoes the knitting in the shroud. But later on she is caught by the maid. Penelope really doesn't want to get remarried. She thinks that her husband is dead also, but she still doesn't want to except it. Her personality to me is someone who is very comitted to someone and will do anything for a loved one.
T is becoming more and more like his father. He is getting a lot more braver as he's getting ready to go out and look for his father. Hes maturing big time. He's not a little boy anymore and he knows that it's time to go and look for Odysseus. Even though he doesn't know if Odysseus is even alive.
At the end of the book Telemachus is getting ready to leave. He is getting all his things together and so is Athena. She helps him by dressing like him and then she goes out and hires a crew and also a ship to use. She also puts everyone asleep so that Telemachus can prepare his belongings.
Calypso likes Odysseus and wants him to stay with her and marry her. But Odysseus does not want to. She even offers him immorlity, but he does not want that either. He has hope that he can reunite with is wife because he loves her very much and also wants her back. Even though he betrayed his wife and slept with Calypso, he still would prefer Penelope more than Calypso. I think Calypso is very tricky and likes to make things difficult in life. She really wants her way. In the book she is a sex goddess
Oydsseus is a good man i think even though he slept with someone that nots his wife.
Poesiden is mad because the gods decided without him. So of course he is going to be mad.

  14. The suitors are mean!!! They are disrespectful and just want what is best for themselves. They believe that they have control over Telemachus. They want Telemachus' money and fortune. I would do the same thing if i was in Penelope's situation. She has been taking her weaving out every night for 3 years because she doesn't want to marry someone else. She still believes that Odysseus is alive. Telemachus is becoming more of a man. He has some help from the Gods and Goddess'. He is talking charge and not let the suitors boss him around as much. At the end of Book II Athena takes the body of other people and gets the ship and men ready for Telemachus to take on his voyage to rescue Odysseus. Telemachus gets the supplies ready for his trip but doesn't tell anybody but his nurse. He doesn't want his mom to know because she might not let him go. At the very end they set off to find information on Odysseus.

In the Book VI Odysseus and Calypso are in a cave together without anything from the outside world. Calypso is a sex goddess and has offered immortally to Odysseus if he will become her husband. Even though he may never leave he has said no. He is staying true to Penelope even though he may never see her again. I'm not a guy so I can't speak for him but he has been gone for about 19 years and is living with a sex goddess. If Odysseus could have one wish it would be to get home to Penelope. Poseidon is angry because the God's decided Odysseus's fate without him. Book VI ends with Odysseus on the island covered in leaves.

  15. The suitors remind me of the show The Bachelorette. They go into a house, live there, and all fight for one woman. They are going into T and Penelope's house, eating all their food, and killing all their animals. They are all after their land and money. Killing someone else's animals is a pretty big deal. It would be considered a crime today! Penelope is a loyal wife because she does not one of the suitors to marry. She still wants Odysseus to come back and continue being her husband. I mean, he is the father of her child! Like Morgan said, Penelope is making a shawl for her father and when it is finished she is to marry. Except every day after she weaves, she unweaves it all so it will never be finished and will never have to marry. It is not her wish to be married to someone besides Odysseus. T is becoming more of a man it seems like. Before Athena came and talked to him, he just put up with the suitors. Now with the help of the Gods, he is beginning to stand up to them. He is taking more of a father figure role in the story. Taking protecting his mother into this own hands. At the end of book two, T is off to in search of his father. T gets all his supplies ready for his trip but doesn't tell anybody except his nurse. He is afraid if his mother finds out that she won't let him go. T is determined to find Odysseus.

Odysseus and Calypso are two totally different people. She is a sex goddess but he is a married man. It is just him and her on the island which would be very tempting. She has tried tempting him with telling him that she would offer immortally to him if he married her. Knowing she is a very attractive woman. She also won't allow him to return home. She wants him for herself. When the gods tell Calypso she has to let him go, it seems like a somewhat painful experience for her. She has to do the unwilling and let him free. Odysseus just wants to be back with is wife and son. Poseidon is angry because the God's decided to let Odysseus go without getting his approval. When Odysseus is out on the water trying to sail home, Poseidon sets up a storm and destroys his ship so Odysseus has to swim to the nearest island. The book ends with Odysseus laying on the island covered in leaves.

  16. The suitors are very disrespectful. They want to marry Penelope just for her money. They want to make their lives better and they dont care who they hurt in the process. I think Penelope is very smart. She has been knitting a burial shroud and every night she has been taking it apart so it will never be finished. She doesnt want to remarry and i dont blame her. She shouldnt have to. Telemachus has changed in a way that makes him seem more grown up. He is kind of filling in for his father. At the end Telemachus leaves for Pylos. He is going to figure things out about his father.

The relationship between Odysseus and Calypso is strange, I think. Odysseus still loves Penelope and he wants to go home and see her but he is trapped on this island. Odysseus has been very truthful to his wife. He is stuck with a sex goddess but he still wants to go home with Penelope. Poseidon gets upset because he figured out that the gods made a decision with out him. So Poseidon stirs up a storm in an attempt to kill him. Book V ends after with Odysseus on an island. The only way he made it to the island is because of Athena. She helped him to the island with a shield. Odysseus makes it to the island and he goes to rest in the trees of the forest.

  17. The Suitors are mean and disrespectful and they are ruining every thing at Mrs. Ps house and Telemachus is getting upset because they are disrespectful to his mom. The Suitors are killing the animals and making messes Telemachus wants them to leave. Telemachus talks to the town people to make them leave

In book five Odysseus and Calypso are together inside a cave. Calypso wants to marry him but he dont want to because he is married to Penelope and Calypso is a crazy sex goddess. He is away from his wife for 19 years ,but he is still staying loyal to her even though he might not ever see her again for his hole life.
At the end they let him go ,but podeidon makes a big strom cause he is mad and he has to swim to the nearest island and he falls asleep onshore.

  18. I think that suitors are very mean, rude, and disrespectful to Mr. T and Ms. P. They only care about themselves and what is best for them and no one else. They think that they have control over telemechus but they really dont. The only reason they are there with Penelope and telechmus is because they only want them for their money, fortune, and land. They are living in their house using all their things and eating all their food... Pretty annoying. The suitors are very selfish and kind are kind of hoping that Odysseus is dead so that one of them can marry Ms. P. I think that Penelope is definitely doing the right thing by waiting and no marrying anyone else because she still believs that Odysseus is alive. I also think that Telemechus is becoming more and more of a man and is starting to come into his own. He is standing up a lot more for himself and his mother and not letting the suitors boss him around or disrespect him or the rest of his family.

In book 5 Odysseus and Calypso are on an island with nobody but each other. He has been on this island with Calypso, who is a sex goddesss for over nine years. She has offered for him to be his husband but even though he may never be back with Penelope he is still staying true and faithful to her. He has been gone for over 19 years and is still staying faithful and true to himself and Penelope.

  19. I believe that the suitors are disrespectful becuase they just want P for her money and her house. They are not treating the house nice because they all go over to the house and trashing it. One of the suitors stood up for the suitors and said that Mrs. P suduces all of the suitors but commits to none of them. If I was Mrs. P i wouldn't marry any of the suitors either. Penelope said that once she gets done weaving the shroud for her father-in-law Laertes she said that is when she is going to marry one of the suitors. She is very faithful to Mr. 0. She believes that he is still alive and that he is going too come back and live with her again. T doesn't want her to do anything that he knows that his father will not like. Mr. T is changing into a young man and he is telling the townspeople what the suitors are doing and how they shouldn't be doing what they are doing to his mother and her house beacause P still likes Mr. O. So the gods heard what Mr. T was talking about and they sent eagles over the house. Which this is gods intervention. Eagles are a bad ohman. At the end of book 2 is when Mr. T goes looking for his father he goes and gets a boat and know he is on a adventure to find Mr. O

In book 5 Mr. O and ms. C are together on the island. By themselves. He has been with her for 9 years and he must really by loyal to his wife if he still wont commit to a marriage not knowing if Mrs. P is still alive or if she got re married. Ms. C is going to let Mr. O go because she knows that he is commited to his wife Mrs. P. She gave him a bronze axe and a bunch of cloths. He used the axe to cut down the trees to make a boat. Then he left the island and he left Mrs. C and then Posieden saw him in the ocean heading for home and he was on a vacation and on his way back he saw Mr. O in the ocean and put a huge storm right around him and he didn't want him to be free. but Ino gives he a scarf as a sheild to get out of the storm and he swims all the way to a island where there are people that cloth him there. Ino led him out of the storm and into safety.

  20. The suitors in this story get very upset with Penelope when she tries everything she can to slow the process of her wanted husband's return and Telemachus is gaining the reason and strength to find his father now. When he leaves .. the nurse is the only one who knows of the mission and not even his mother knows b/c if she did, she would fear the loss of the only other family she has. When Odysseus is on the island, he meets Calypso and he wants nothing to do with her and just wants to go home to his wife.. this whole thing has been very hard for them, but Hermes tells Calypso she has to let him go and they give him a raft and Ino,the scarf and Poseidon makes a big storm and wrecks his raft so he couldn't go anywhere and after Posiedon leaves on vacation, the Gods have a meeting to figure out how they will get Odysseus off the island.
Athena and Calypso intervene in Odysseus' life and Telemachus': he wants to save his father. Calypso is in the way of Odysseus' way home while Athena wants to help Telemachus find his father and bring him home.Ino also helps. tis book ends where Odysseus is covered in leaves along the side of the island.

  21. The suitors have a right to be complaining because she is playing them by undoing what she acomplished on the shroud. She told them that she would pick one once the shroud was finished. Mr. T and Penelope also can be mad because the suitors are destroying their house, drinking their wine, and killing their cows. The main reason all those men are there is for her land and money. Mr. T wants them to leave because he wants his dad back so he has a town meeting to try to get them voted to go home. These two eagles come and attack the suitors that are speaking out against Mr. T. Mr. T has changed by growing up and doing what he thinks his father would want him to do. He is becoming very mature. At the end of this book Mr. T is on his boat getting ready to leave and go talk to a King on his mission of finding his father.

Odysseus and Calypso are just a sexual relationship because she is a sex goddess. Calypso is trying to get Odysseus to marry him but he is loyal to Penelope even when Calypso offers him immortitally. Odysseus gained a lot of my respect because why would you not wanna marry a sex goddess and be immoral? He is very loyal. So Calypso gives him the stuff he needs to make a raft and is leaving and Posiden gets back from vacation and sees Odysseus on the sea and gets mad and sends winds and storms his way. Odysseus was about to die and got on shore of a island and the kings daughter found him and brought Odysseus to the king.

  22. i do not like the suitors. i think that they are just out to get the money and the house. and i think that if penelope isn't ready to move on then they should just leave her alone and let her be. i don't think that it is fair for them to go in T's house and eat all his food and try to take his mom away. Then when T tells them to leave they think that he is crazy and that if O comes back they can kill him so they can get Pemelope.

i think that she is smart. i think that if she really doesn't want to get remarried she shouldn't have to. she was smart to weave the shround for her father and undo it at night because it gave her more time.

T is changing because he is becomeing a man. he had to grow up wihtout his father. and now he is having to find out if his dad is still alive or if he is really dead. He has to find out and then he has to get his mom remarried. He is a brave man now because he sets off on an adventure and doesn't know what hes going to find.

book 2 is prety much about how Anthna came and told him what he had to do the night before. so he is calling a meeting and everybody is telling him that he is crazy and that if his dad is alive it won't matter because they can take him because there are alot more of them then just his dad. At the end T is leaving.

in book 5 Odysseus and Calypso are on an island. they have been there for 19 years. Calypso is a sex godess and she offerse O imortality if he agrees to be her husband. He says no because he would rather die then have to spend forever without his wife. even though he does stuff with Calypso he still loves his wife, he crys all day because he misses her and feels guilty.

I think that Odysseus is a good man because he stays comited to his wife and marriage with penelope.

Poseidon is mad because all the other gods chose O's fait without asking him, so he trys to stop O from getting home.

The end of book 5 is when O swimms to Phaeacians and covers himself with leaves.

  23. Okay, so like everyone else says the suitors are pigs. Rotten men. Men who don't care about anyone, but themselves.Penelope is a smart women. She knows what she wants and what she wants is not to marry one of those men. She is smart to knit during the day and unravel at night. T is a smart young man. He is becoming a true man. Having a converstation with the elderly we truly saw what he is capable of. He is smart with his words and knows what he wants to get out of life. At the end of the book Athena gets everything ready for T and the rest of the crew to sail off and find his dad.

Odysseus and Calypso have a weird relationship. She wants him, but he doesn't. The quote "He was seated along the shore; his eyes were never dry, and his sweet life was squandered as he wept for his dear home; he now took no delight in her: the nymph no longer pleased his sight. By night, indeed, within Calypso's cave, he slept with her: so side by side they lay, the willing and unwilling. But by day, his hear was tent by torment as he sat along the sands or on the rocks; he watched the never-resting sea and watching, wept." So he likes her and Penelope is not as beautiful as her because P is mortal and C isn't. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love P anyless. He married P and wants to say truthful to her. (even though he isn't really) I think O is kind a good man. And kind of a wimp. He stays true to his wife(a little), but at the same time he doesn't do anything to try to leave. And when he does and he gets into a little pickle from Posidoen he kind of loses all hope. Thinks that he is going to die because he doesn't see anyone right away. Poseidon is mad because when he was away the gods talked about O without him. He isn't really mad that O is leaving it's the fact that they left him out of the conversation. So to lash out on the gods he will take his anger out on O and it works. At the end of book five O climbs up on a cliff and goes into some brushes and falls into a deep sleep.

Both of the books have something about the gods helping. You have them helping T trying to find his dad and O trying to get back to his family. The gods do really wanna help, but who knows maybe something bad could happen.

  24. I dont think the suitors are very nice at all they just to come in and take Mr. T's mom from him and thats all he has in his life. Penclope still likes Odyessues and believes he is still alive she is looking for him and wants to find him. Once she does she will marry first. Mr. T wanrs to go find out if his dad is dead or alive now. At the end of book 2 Mr. T leaves to go try and find his father.

In bookk 5 Odyesseus and Calypso have feelings for eachother but i belive that they dont show them that much. O has faith and pride and wants to return home but Calypso wont let him she is a sex goddess and wants to be his lover. I believe O is a great man for staying loyal to his wife and wants to go back home. Poseidon acts the way he does because they say that O can go home so he starts to and he trys to kill him. I dont think he should have reacted this badly. At the end of book 5 O makes it to land but has to swim to shore when he gets there he puts leaves on him.
In both books the gods interven alot they want O to be happy and go home but yet the one god P doesnt want him to so there is some dissagreements.

  25. I think all the suitors are greedy pigs. They stick around Telemachus' house and hope to win over Penelope and marry her merely for her wealth and estate. They have great feasts everyday in which they eat a lot and get drunk, basically. All the suitors completely overstay their welcome at the estate. Telemachus holds no compassion or high regard for any of the suitors. At the end of the first book, he decides he will go to the elders of Ithica to get help to decide what he should to about the suitors. As for Penelope, she acts as though she is keen on each and every one of the suitors, she leads them on. She says she will weave or knit a robe for Laertes, and when it is finished, she will choose her husband. However, all the work she accomplishes on it in a day is unraveled by night so as to buy time and not have to choose a suitor. She is waiting for her Odysseus to return home. After her strategy was discovered, however, some of the elders didn't think of her so highly anymore and believe Penelope's father should choose a suitor for her if she will not choose for herself. I think Penelope is clever and shouldn't be forced to marry a greedy, conniving suitor.
After the meeting with the elders, Telemachus realizes that he must go out and find news of his father, who Athena had said was still alive, being held captive by Calypso. Telemachus hates the suitors, and with good reason. The suitors will plan to kill Telemachus upon his return from his journey. Telemachus leaves on his voyage with the help of Athena and many crew members.
At the end of Book 2, Telemachus and his crew members with the help of Athena, load up his ship and set sail for Pylos to try and find word of Odysseus.

Odysseus doesn't love Calypso. He doesn't hate her either, and if he did, it would soley be because she is holding him captive, away from his home land. He sleeps with her, and stays with her against his will. He's obviously unhappy and cries everyday by the water, longing to go home. It's weird though, because if I were Odysseus and I wanted to go home that badly, I would probably feel some sort of contempt or anger for the one holding me captive. He's so quiet about it, the suffer in silent agony type.

In book 5, Odysseus is motivated and strong-willed. With the help of Calypso, he builds a ship and leaves for his journey home. However, Poseidon sees Odysseus traveling over the seas and creates a storm that really tests Odysseus' will to survive. He thinks about staying with the ship or abandoning it and swimming to land. Ino helps him by giving him her veil, shawl thing that carries him to safer waters, and he then returns it to her. Athena also helps with creating a safer passage for him. He was brave during the storm, and now could get rest in a protective forest he comes across on the island.
Poseidon gets mad because he wasn't around when the gods decided Odysseus' fate. He was left out and constructed the storm as a sort of vengeance? Or he was just throwing a large tantrum. Haha.
Book 5 ends with Odysseus being brought to safer waters and a safer passage to an island where he finds a forest so knit together that it provides shelter from rain or cold. He falls asleep with the help of Athena.
The gods intervene when help is needed. Telemachus needed help to find his father; he needed a boat, a crew, direction..etc. Odysseus needed help avoiding a great storm created by one god(Poseidon) and received help from 2 goddesses, Ino and Athena to get him out of that sticky situation pronto.

  26. the suitors are like everyone else said, very disrespectful and have no right to come into their house and take T's mom. she has a right as to who she wants to be with and she wants to be with T's dad. the only people that still think that O is still alive is T and his mother. T is determined that his father is still alive and so he sets off on a journey to go find him.

in the next books we read O is getting ready to set off and get away from C's island. they have feelings for eachother but they don't show it because O just really wants to be with T's mother. but its really hard for him to get away from C because she loves him and wants to marry him.

  27. I think that the suitors are very gross, dishonest, and disrespectful. The only reason they are there is to hopefully win over Penelope , Telemachus' mother, so they can have all her wealth and fortune. Penelope has to pick just one and she says she will do so when she is done sewing a robe. She spends all day weaving this robe, and at the end of the day she unweaves what she sewed. I think she does this for two reasons. I think that she still has hope her husband is alive and will return. The other reason, I believe, is because she knows the suitors are just after her for her money and she sees that they're just pigs.

Odysseus and Calypso's relationship confuses me. I don't understand why Odysseus would just start messing around with some other woman when he's still technically married. Like, does he not love Penelope anymore? After reading book V, I thought about their relationship some more. It seams like they have very strong feelings for each other, but never really acted upon them. Almost as if Odysseus is clinging onto some hope that he will one day return home to Penelope.

Posieden reacts the way he does because he wasn't informed about what was going on on Mount Olympus. Because of that, he didn't have any say in Odysses' trial, so I think he had a right to be upset.

  28. What is the relationship between Odysseus and Calypso? What is your opinion of Odysseus in Book V? Why does Poseidon react the way he does? How does Book V end?

Odysseus and Calypso seem to be on the same page between each other. They are both aware that Odysseus would rather be back in his home land with his wife. Although, Calypso is a sex goddess and Odysseus does sleep with her, he does not want to. He would rather die than be trapped there even though Calypso has been kind to him. Calypso wants to turn Odysseus immortal and make him her husband, but she is aware of his feelings and will not step in the way. My opinion on Odysseus would be that he seems to be someone who knows how to take care of himself. I mean when Calypso informs him that he is free to go he builds a ship and takes care of everything before he takes off. He also seems foolish to me though, through his actions with Calypso. Poseidon brings about a huge storm against Odysseus because he is furious that he was freed. Not only furious just because he was freed, but because the other gods decided to free him without his input when he was gone. Book V ends with Odysseus reaching the shore of the land of the Phaeacians. He was hesitant to abandon ship when a nymph told him to (and to swim to shore with her shawl around him), but did when a big wave came up and left his ship in pieces. He came close to death in the waters and could not find his way to shore, but Athena guided him to the shore. She gave him a wonderful sleep from all the struggles he had been put up against.

Discuss the intervention of the gods in both Book II and Book V.

Book II: When Telemachus had been talking to the townspeople and the suitors he could find no solution to his problem. But Zeus sent two eagles down as a warning to the suitors who would not budge on their decision to stay at Telemachus' house. They still did not budge, but were completely aware of this warning.
Book V: There was a lot of intervening in this book. First you find that Athena is still making it possible for Telemachus to leave for his journey. She finds crew and a ship for him. Also, in general when the gods send Hermes to talk to Calypso so she will let Odysseus go. When the nymph helps Odysseus in the ocean telling him that he needed to jump and swim to shore. The bad intervention of Poseidon trying to stop Odysseus. Also, when Athena guides him to shore and grants him with rest.

  29. The suitors just want Penelope because that means they get the fame and fortune that goes with it, not to mention she looks like a goddess. Penelope really doesnt play that big of a role the most you hear of her is her grieving in her room and what not. Also it seems like she leads on the suitors and makes them think there is hope for them. Telemechus finally decides that he will leave on the path that athena has set for him. He finally grows up and realizes what needs to be done. At the end of the chapter zeus sends down to eagles to warn the suitors of what will happen to them.

odysseus and calypso have a one sided relationship. Calypso wants him to stay with her and she offers him immortality but all Odysseus wants is to go home to his family. Finally the gods intervene with Calypso and talk her in to letting him go. she helps him build a raft and gather food and he finally sets sail. meanwhile poisedon sees him sailing and learns that the gods have set him free against poisedons will. He puts odysseus through a storm that destroys his raft and leaves him to swim to a river mouth.

  30. The Suitors are only interested in two things Penelope's estate and her money. I really think Penelope is leading everyone on and needs to stop.

Odysseus and Calypso are in an interesting relationship because Odysseus loves Penelope and wants to be with her but Calypso wants him for herself... (husband). but when she has to let him go she helps him with building a raft. but when poisedon finds out it isn't pretty he tries to kill him with a big storm
