HAMLET Act 1 -- Group Discussion Blog

Get together with your discussion group and decide how you want to manage the discussion -- daily? every other day? specific focus? anything that comes to your mind? any insights you may have? any questions you may have?

By Tuesday, November 3rd, your group should have had at least six discussion posts; you may, however, want to keep discussion of previous posts ongoing as you learn more about Hamlet and about the other characters' relationship with Hamlet as well as themes.

I will post ideas or questions throughout the reading that may help focus your discussions, but these will only be suggestions.

My vision is that your blog discussions will fuel class discussions as we work through the intricacies of the play.

My first suggestions are:
1. Write a very short summary of Act 1
2. Reread Hamlet's soliloquy on page 29. What does that tell you about Hamlet?
3. What is Machiavellianism, and how does it relate to the play?
4. What themes are beginning to develop in Act 1?

  2. We talked about how quickly Hamlets mom married after her husband was killed. It seems like she wanted him to be gone so she could have his brother. That than makes Hamlet angry. We thought that one of the theme's would be betrayal. Hamlet felt as though his mother betrayed him, but he still has to honor her and do what she tells him to.
Machiavellianism means that you should take people as untrust worthy and self serving when looking at political things.

  3. We talked about how Hamlet is angry because his mother is marrying his uncle right. She was not even waiting but two months until she did also. Ir was so soon and Hamlet was very much against it and does not agree with this decision. So overall we believe that she just wanted Hamlet's father dead and gone just so she can have his brother and marry him.

  4. Machiavellianism is a state of being cunning and/or scheming and this deals especially with politics. In this people are to look upon others as if they cannot trust them and are only looking to do good for themselves. For example, the king has his many people chosen as spies. Like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who spy on Hamlet so that they could reap the benefits. Also, in this we see the king looking at Hamlet as a threat to his kingship and love of his wife. He wants to get rid of him, but needs others to back him or help him in this. (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern). They were helping the king by spying on Hamlet while also betraying their friend Hamlet.

Themes: Betrayl, Revenge, Love, Glory, Jealousy (It is a never ending circle almost like Karma), Deceit/deception

Soliloquy- He cannot understand how the ones around him are the ones that deceive him the most. He does not understand how his mother could possibly be over or have forgotten his father with only two months passed. To marry his brother then as if his love was so much more. His emotions show as if he is the only one to care of the death of his father.
