The Odyssey Book XXIII

Why Does Penelope still doubt Odysseus even when he reveals himself? In what ways does Book XXIII depict the human condition (human emotions)?

For the Cycle of the Hero -- Triumph is what they each going after. Look at the Cycle of the Hero graphic in your purple packet. The Triumph choices are at the bottom of the circle. Telemachus' Triumph is different from Odysseus' Triumph, but they get what they are going after in Book XXIII.

  1. Pen doubts Od because she thinks that the God's are trying to decive her. In my opinion I think she feels guilty for agreeing to marry another man and she might feel as though the Gods are going to punish her for not staying loyal to Od. I think this book shows that sometimes when you long for something for such an extreme length of time..when life finally puts it right in front of you..well you can't believe it even with your own eyes. This plays on human emotions because you just feel so incredibly happy that it almost scares you..because if its not real then when its taken away it will hurt even more than the first time.

  2. P is doughtful because O has been away for so long. Even though she wanted to believe he was alive she still had dought that even if he was alive that he probably didn't want to come home and be back with her and that he had probably found better. She also is probably in shock and kind of dumbfounded that she had been talking to her husband just nites before and not known it. She also doesn't want to believe it right away because what if they were playing a trick she would be just as hurt once again. after all the years of trying to get over him.

  3. P was doubtful because O has been gone for a really long time. She believes that he is alive still a little bit but that belief is fading. She thinks that if he is alive that hes been gone for so long that he wouldnt even want to come back and be with her and marry her still. She thinks he has found someone better than he and that he would rather be with that person than he. I believe she is feeling kinda bad that she is marring another man and isnt staying loyal to O. I think she should have stayed loyal to him like she said she would in the beginning when he left. I think the Gods may do something to her because she didnt stayed loyal.

  4. I think P is really just in shock. When she sees him she is speechless because he has been gone for so long. Towards the end of the story, her hope that he is going to return began to fade. She is also probably suprised when she realizes this is the man she was talking to not too long ago and didn't know it. This sends P on an emotional rollar-coaster. One mintue you are thinking about marrying another man, then the love of your life returns to fufill his duty as a husband and father. It's so hard to believe P doesn't know what to do. Does she believe it and risk getting hurt by it not being him? When she finally relizes that it is O, it is a really romantic moment for them. It makes me think of in the movie Castaway. Only a lot longer...and the wife didn't get remarried. But when they see eachother when The Castaway guy returns both don't really know how to react. I'm sure P feels guilty because she was considering marrying another man. I think the God's will try to punish her but O will be her Superman and protect her! :)

  5. I think that P is really doubtful because she is so shocked to see him. He has been gone for so long and when you see someone you havent seen in a while it is hard to know what to say or do. she always had faith that he was still alive but as time went on and he was still gone she eventually started losing her faith but their was still a part of her that believed. i think that she feels bad about herself and maybe even guilty for agreeing to marry another man. I think that she wishes that she would have stayed loyal all along and gone with her instinct that he was still alive. I think that the gods will defintly try and punish her for not staying loyal.

  6. I agree with what Tyler said. It's true that when you see someone that you haven't seen in a long time it might seem like there still not even there! That's probably what Penelope was feeling (Shock?). I think that Penelope is deffinitely regreting thinking about a new marriage when O was gone! I think the gods will try and punish her because she wasn't going to remain loyale to O and she began to lose faith towards the end of the story.

  7. i think that she is just scared to acept it. she has had to live without him and now she thinks the gods are tricking her. she also wants O so bad she doesnt want to get happy and have it not be him and have to lose him again. She probably feels bad for giving up on him at the end. she waited for him for so long then agreed to marry someone else so she feels guilty.
this has to deal with emotions because she is so happy that it would hurt her so bad if it ended up not being true.

  8. P doesnt belive it when E tells her that o is downstairs alive. She believes that it is a god tricking her. She is shocked that after 20 years he is finally back and alive! She doesnt feel good about losing faith and giving up on him in the end but it all worked out and now she is with him. The next morning T and 0 go back out to the L with cloaks on so no one can see them

  9. Penelope is at a loss - plain and simple. She has been waiting so long she has lost faith, and so many times suitors and other men wanting her land and power tried to trick her. The book depicts the human condition in this instance of emotions through Penelope. People are so quick to be distrustful because of fear of being hurt. Penelope had been hurt so many times, she had lost a sense of freedom because she was chained down by this same fear of being hurt.

  10. Penelope doubts Odysseus because she has suffered through so many false hopes that Odysseus has finally returned. It's a little like the girl who cried wolf in which the little girl keeps saying that she's being attacked by a wolf and everybody keeps coming to her aid only to realize she was only joking around. But then one day, the wolf really does attack the little girl and she cries wolf! as she always does, and this time no one comes to help her because she's joked about it so many times, they don't believe that it's really happening this time. The same is for Penelope and thinking her Odysseus is finally home, and when he is really there, she doesn't believe it for this reason. She doesn't let her eyes really see him as he stands infront of her. She doesn't fully recognize him until he speaks about his bed and how it was made..etc. This book depicts human emotions like Penelope's constant hope for Odysseus' return and her losing faith for his return at the point that he actually does come back. And dealing with more human emotions, there is also recognition, rememberance,(which kind of go hand in hand)also overwhelming love between Odysseus and Penelope after she finally realizes that it's really him.

  11. P is pretty much in shock because O has been gone for so long. She is scared to accept that he is back because its been so long. I agree with Tyler when someone is gone for so long it doesnt even seem like they are there. And when they get back from such a long time away you really don't no what to say except for to be excited that they are safe and back with you.

  12. Penelope is in doubt that her husband Odysseus will be back because he has been gone for a very long time. It'll be hard on Penelope because she wont believe that he is actually back home. She doesn't really accept seeing him until he speaks. This book represents a lot about emotions because of Penelope's hope from Odysseus to come back home.

  13. P doesnt no what to believe because she hasnt seen her husband in so long she is in shock. It would be hard not to see a loved one for not that long and then just one day have them come back. I think it would be hard for P to deal with because it would be hard to believe. She starts to believe it was him again when he starts to talk to her again

  14. She doubts its him because of all the false hopes she has experienced and the fact it has been 19 years it would just be hard to believe. It would be very hard not seeing someone you loved for that long and all the sudden they just come back like they have never been gone. Love is a human emotion that is reveled in this book and trust. They are two key things that need to come back between these two.

  15. Penelope has been through so much that she did not know what to believe anymore. She wanted to believe that it was her love, Odysseus, but she did not want to be let down again if it was someone impersonating him. It was that fear of being put through more pain upon the rest of what she has gone through. It depicts human condition through the ending emotion of love like this.

  16. When Penelope found out that the stranger was Odysseus I believe she was extremely confused. I think she wanted to believe it was him but couldnt get herslf to accept the fact that he was actally there infront of her.
Penelope's head was saying one thing but her heart was saying another. She didnt was to listen to one and be hurt because it wasnt true.

  17. Penelope realizes that the stranger is Odysseus but is afraid to except it because he has been out of her life for a long time.

she wants it to be true and she feels like it could be but she doesn't want to be played as a fool.

  18. She doesn't know if she should believe Eurycliea because O has been gone for so long that she obvisouly gave up on him. She finally goes down to for herself. When She see O shes still not convinced.
They make human emotions in this book very strong i think.
The book tells about how when everyone sees O they rejoice with happyness and kiss him. P and O after all these years are finally together. They hold eachother and cry together. They are so happy.
This book makes me think that even though O kills a lot of people, only thinks about himself when hes trying to get home, and also how he pretends to be someone else all the time; he still has a heart and emotions and cares for what he loves.

  19. She doesnt believe her own two eyes, she just thinks her mind is playing tricks on her because he's been gone for so long. she thinks the gods are playing tricks on her and doesnt want to believe it but finally she does and they start to talk again about his trip and what has all happened to him and what he still has to do to fill the prophecy.

  20. P doubts that it is really O because he had been gone for so long, and she thought the gods were playing a trick on her. P doesn't think it is him until she says something about the bed, and O says it can't be moved and P is kind of in disbelief because it really is O. I agree with Miranda that something is so hard to believe if something is taken from you for a very long time and is finally returned and put in front of you that you just can't believe that it's true.

  21. Penelope doesn't believe tha tit is really him at first because she had been without him for so long and she thought the gods were playing a trick on her. I also agree with Heidi in that it's almost like the little girl who cried wolf. She had been hearing fabricated stories about her husbend for so long that when he actually was there standing before her it was almost too much for her so take in. She finally realizes that it is in fact him when he begins to talk about his bed and how he made it.

  22. she is doubtful because he has been gone so long and he lied about who he was when he got back..she doesnt know what other surprises he has. but yea she is still doubting him cuz he just has not been there for so long and the she assumed that the gods were tricking her, its going to take some more getting used to.

  23. Why does Penelope still doubt? I would too if I was in her shoes. Her husband has been gone for almost 20 years and he has finally come back alive!! That's amazing! Even if she kept telling people that she knew Odysseys was still alive as the days go on the voice in the back of her head had to be telling her to stop telling a lie. She had to be thinking that at some point she just had to give up hope. We all do this. We say something out loud and try to make ourselves believe it when we know for a fact its not true. We try to fake yourselves out to believing in the make believe.

  24. she doubts who odysseus is because he's been gone for so long she knows not that she could recognize him properly and the fact that heir beliefs are as follows: gods come to them in human form.THey feel the love the hart, tell of their trials, and when she acepts that he truely is h ohe is.. they love and need each other again. :)

  25. P doubts that O is who he truly is because she thinks a God is trying to trick her. She was smart to tell Eurcyleia to move the bed because she knew that she wouldn't be able to. And she knew that O would know to. And if the man said anything she then of course O would be the beggar. I also think she feels guilty is because she was so close to marrying another man that she doesn't want O to be mad at her for it. The book shows great human emotions. O has been gone for so long that P doesn't want to believe that O is really here. Sometimes when something has been gone for so long in your life you don't always believe that it's truly real now. You get scared because you don't want to end up being not true. P didn't want to believe it was really O because she was scared that it was a joke. That her husband wasn't there and he was never coming back. She has been hurt so many times before she doesn't want to be hurt again. All she wants is her life back.
