Talk about what you learned about the story of Oedipus from what you read in the introduction.

What did you learn (or what questions do you have) about the play from what you have seen and read so far?

  1. So far I have learned, we are set in the time of many years after Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx and is now the King. He lives at the Royal House of Thebes. In the beginning, sick men are coming to the door of the kingdom to be healed by Oedipus. A Priest that is there starts talking about Thebes. Everything the town is dying. Plants, cows, women dying in labor, stillborns, & they talk about the plague. Oedipus is their god, not quite as powerful as like Zeus, but he freed them from the Sphinx. All the men talk how they are sick, but Oedipus says he is sicker than them because he has to watch them suffer. He is trying to save the city. Creon, the queen's brother (I think) shows up with a message from Apollo that all the corruption in Thebes needs to be ended.

  2. I have learned that there is a curse on the land because, Oedipus killed his dad. The people are counting on Oedipus to save the day once again.

  4. Oedipus is the son of Laius, king of Thebes. His father hears a prophecy about his son killing him, so he sends the baby into the hills to be shackled and die. However, the shepherd sent to do the dirty work feels bad for baby Oedipus so he sends him to a faraway land.. Eventually, Oedipus moves back to Thebes and on his way runs into a band of people (including the king, Laius) and they won't move out of his way so he kills them. Then he continues on his way to Thebes and when he gets there he finds that they are stuck under the curse of the Sphinx who won't let the people be unconfused until her riddle is solved. Oedipus naturally solves it and is then promoted to king of Thebes, marrying his mother, having 4 kids with her.

At the beginning of the play, the people of Thebes come to him to fix the problem of everyone dying which is a direct result of Oedipus killing Laius. He doesn't know that Laius was his father or that he married his mother, so he doesn't know where to begin fixing the problem, but promises to do something.

  5. So far I know that Oedipus has solved a riddle many years ago and since then, he has been the king of Thebes. People are coming to him asking if he can stop this plague that is killing everything/everyone. Oedipus killed Laius (his father) but doesnt know it...so this "stanger" he has to find is himself but he has no clue.

  6. The important thing to remember from the beginning is how the people feel about Oedipus. Find quotations that show this.
Another issue to remember is what Creon tells Oedipus about his visit to the Oracle of Apollo (if you don't know what an oracle is of who Apo;;o is, you need to find out). What Keep in mind the importance of Oedipus's response. Find quotations.

  7. So far I have learned that people are coming to the royal house to tell Oedipus how sick they are all becoming. To The people of Thebes he is is the highest a human can become, in other words he is their human form of God. "But we do rate you first of men, both in the common crises of our lives and face-to-face encounters with the gods" (161). Creon tells Oedipus that for the illness to be swept from the land there must be vengance. From what I can tell a long time ago before Oedipus was the king their former king was killed, all of the men who participated in this were killed except for one that got away. That one man left must be killed before the land can be free of the curse. '"Well, he was killed, and Apollow commands us now- he could not be more clear, "Pay the killers back- whoever is responsible"' (164). Oedipus finds it astonishing that he wasn't tracked down right after the murder. "Trouble? Your king was murdered-royal blood! What stopped you from tracking down the killer then and there?" (166).

  10. So far I have learned that Oedipus has killed the king and did not realize that it was the king he had killed. He has made rules that are to be followed if the killer is found. And he said that if it is him that is the killer then so be it that he is to face the same punishments. and the same with the people that work for him. they are setting out to go find this killer and bring him to justice. they are all so disappointed in the king's servant because he ran away when he was supposed to capture the man right then and there, but he didn't capture him, he ran away because he was scared and didn't know what to do. the sphinx was cursing the people while O was killing his dad (king) so they did not catch him.

  11. Oedipus killed his father and married his mother. He is also unaware of this, but he has become (like his father) King of the land and has a very powerful duty, but when he finds that the murderer of Laius is to be found and banished and finds it to be him... he becomes confused and incapable of understanding what to do.

  12. Oedipus is very respected as king even due to his prophecy. It was said that Oedipus would grow up to kill his father and marry his mother. This disgusted and worried Oedipus' father Laius. He could not bear to have this prophecy come true. So he gave his son to a shepherd to have him killed. (metal bars through back of ankles causing him to die as an infant). The shepherd, however, could not do such a thing. So he gave him off to adopt. This is where he later became king and saved the people of Thebes by solving the riddle of the Sphinx. By this time he also had fulfilled the prophecy. He killed his father in a rash act unaware of who it was, and married his mother bearing 4 children with her (also unaware of this). The people of Thebes also think he can save them from this bad time now. Everything in the city is dying and no one knows why, yet. They need to find out who murdered Laius to fix it.

  13. I learned that Oedipus was first coming to a new place because he was told he was going to kill his father and marry his mother. So he decied to go away from his him, but little did he know those weren't his real parents. On his jurney to Thebes he kills a group of men. He solved a riddle of that the sphinx set up which made him the king of thebes. he is now a very respected king. Now everything in the city seems to be dying and they are trying to figure out what they should do.
